This week, we had the Boca Magazine staff select some of their favorite tunes as of late. We’ve also made a playlist of these songs. Enjoy!

Kat Algeo, Subscription Coordinator

Song: “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” by Israel Kamakawiwo’ole

“With all the political madness surrounding us at the moment, this is where I find my happy place, nestled up with Israel Kamakawiwo’ole and his rendition of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.”

Marie Speed, Editor-in-Chief

Song: “Better Together” by Jack Johnson

“This song popped up on Pandora the day after the hurricane. I had just come home after evacuating my little house and was opening up hurricane shutters. The sun was shining, there was little breeze in the palms and then that great hopeful song about love. What better way to celebrate a storm that stayed away.”

Allison Lewis, Associate Editor

Song: “I Know Somebody” by LoCash

“It keeps popping up on the country radio stations and it’s one of those catchy songs that just gets stuck in your head. Plus, you can’t go wrong with country music.”

Valentine S. Fracassi, Assistant Art Director

Song: “Wandering Star” by Portishead

“For some reason, this particular song wasn’t available on Spotify for the longest time, and now it is. It has everything I love about most of Portishead’s songs: a chilled-out trip-hop beat, darkly poetic lyrics and irreverent drum and guitar riffs. Most of all, it brings me back to the memories of when the song was new to me.”

Mandy Wynne, Production Manager

Song: “Burn the Witch” by Radiohead

“Because everything that Radiohead does is awesome, and the first song on their latest collaboration is co-incidentally in Season.

Portia Smith, Digital Media Strategist

Song: “Redemption Song” by Bob Marley

Rebecca Valenza, Director of Marketing and Advertising

Song: “Sit Still, Look Pretty” by Daya

“I’m an insane girl for the Girl Power in all of us, and I love tunes that make you want to turn up the volume and sing out loud.”

David Shuff, Video Editor

Song: “Old Heart Falls” by Katatonia

“This former death metal band from Stockholm, Sweden found their current mellower sound about ten years ago, and have recorded four albums since, including the latest “The Fall of Hearts” released May 20, 2016.”

John Thomason, Arts & Entertainment Editor

Song: “It’s the End of the World” by R.E.M.

“I listened to this breathless 1980s college-rock staple on repeat while jogging last Friday, with the intent of singing it at karaoke in Delray that night. It seemed appropriate timing, what with the lyric “Eye of a hurricane,” and the song’s political implications in a dangerous election season. Alas, Hurricane Matthew caused a cancelation of karaoke, but at least I feel I know this blisteringly fast word salad a little bit better now.”

Jason Clary, Web Editor

Song: “Barbeque” by Animal Liberation Orchestra

“One of by favorite bands, ALO sings this song about the ups and downs of life. It’s a reminder that while things might not always go your way or as you planned, life is still beautiful.”
