Boca Raton Regional Hospital (800 Meadows Road; 561/995-7100; brrh.com) recently received the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Silver Plus Quality Achievement Award which recognizes the hospital’s high level of stroke patient care.
According to the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association, stroke is one of the leading causes of death and long-term disability in the United States. Someone suffers a stroke every 40 seconds on average and someone dies of a stroke every four minutes. More than 750,000 people suffer a new or recurrent stroke every year.
With alarming statistics like these and an aging Palm Beach County population, Boca Raton Regional Hospital uses the Get With The Guidelines program which is the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s hospital-based quality improvement program. According to the program, the “teachable moment,” (the time soon after a patient has a stroke) is when they are most likely to listen to and follow their doctor’s guidance. Studies have shown that patients, who are taught how to manage their risk factors while still in the hospital, reduce their risk of a second event. Customized patient education materials are made available at the point of discharge, based on each patient’s individual risk profiles.
“The Quality Achievement Award demonstrates that our staff is committed to providing care that has been shown in the scientific literature to quickly and efficiently treat stroke patients with evidence-based protocols,” said Douglas DeOrchis, Interventional Radiologist at Boca Raton Regional Hospital.
