Testing Vapour Organic Beauty’s Free Makeup Shade Consultation

We featured Vapour Organic Beauty in our July/August 2017 issue. To see more stories like this, subscribe to the magazine.

Hi there, beauty fans! We spoke with Vapour Organic Beauty co-founder, Krysia Boinis in our July/August issue of Boca. Unlike other organic beauty lines, each Vapour product is made of 70 percent organic ingredients and 30 percent natural pigments and essential oils. There are tons of color options for lips, eyes, and face. However, if you’re like me, sometimes it’s overwhelmingly difficult to pick just the right shade to match your skin complexion. Luckily, Vapour has a Free Shade Consultation that helps users get the best shade for their skin tone. I tested it out, and with the help of Boca’s web editor, Shayna, we documented the results below.

Delray Beach Fashion Week; New Events and Fashion for All

It’s that time of year again — Delray Beach Fashion Week! DBFW is one of our favorite weeks of the year because it gives us the opportunity to connect with all of the great fashion and beauty businesses in Delray Beach.

That being said, these opportunities aren’t just limited to the fashion and lifestyle businesses of the world. YOU can all come, too! Here is what you need to know about what is going on this year:

New Events

We’ll be celebrating the spectacular fashion, local designers, art and beauty at the 4th annual Delray Beach Fashion Week created by the Downtown Development Authority and downtown merchants. Local designs and diverse fashions will take center stage at the fashion runway events, designer showcase, fashion luncheon, “Stiletto Race,” and — for the first time — boutique pop-up shopping event.

Events will take place throughout downtown Delray Beach and many are free to the public. Tickets for the Delray Beach Designer Show, Fashion Luncheon and runway seats at the fashion shows can be purchased at each event.

Fashion Exclusives at Bloomingdales Boca Raton

Alert the media, Bloomingdales Boca Raton has the hottest, most popular styles of the season, and LLScene was there for an exclusive look! We covered some of our favorite fall styles in a recent blog post, but want to share even more with you today.

The amazing staff at Bloomingdales Boca Raton hosted your favorite local fashion bloggers for a morning of brunch, champagne and fall fashion. Here’s what you should be wearing this season…

Bomber Jackets

Bomber jackets took over the runway during New York Fashion Week in February. We know what you’re thinking: when will I ever be able to wear a bomber jacket in this heat? Lucky for you, Kim Kardashian started the trend of wearing jackets and coats over her shoulders, so you never miss an opportunity to wear one of fall’s hottest trends.

Splendid Varsity Bomber Jacket 100% Bloomingdales Exclusive

Endless Rose Floral Sequin Bomber Jacket Bloomingdales Exclusive

Lucy Paris Bomber Jacket

The Camera Bag

One of our favorite Bloomingdales’ exclusives is the Camera Bag. The small size will complement any look you’re going for, but also have enough room for the necessary essentials you need to bring for a night out on the town. Bring on your hairbrush and press powder!

Michael Kors Camera Bag

Milly Camera Bag

Give us stylish comfort and we’re on board. Because of our South Florida climate, we understand that this may be another trend that’s hard to implement into your wardrobe, but hear us out. With the help of casual sweater dresses, you can totally embrace it. Sweats have been given the style seal of approval in NYC, and we’re taking advantage of it. Hoodies are the new go-to layering piece, paired perfectly with heels, booties and over-the-knee boots. Give us more opportunities to lampshade, we’re in.

Rebecca Minkoff Off the Shoulder Sweater Dress

Kendall & Kylie Shredded Dress – Bloomingdales Exclusive

FENTY Puma vs. Rhianna Lace Up Leggings

Choker Necklaces

Another trend we covered last week, but still a favorite. Before they started trending in the 90s, chokers were the necklace of choice in the Victorian era, making 2016 their third comeback. Stack them on your neck or pair them with a bomber jacket and you’re a walking talking fashion statement.

Aqua Fallyn Double Studded Choker, 11″

Aqua Freddie Choker

Vanessa Mooney Choker

The Red Lip

Gone are the days of not being able to pull off red lips. Don’t lie to yourself, we’ve all said it. The lip forecast for fall calls for versatile hues, perfect for any skin type. It allows for the perfect accent to any of the most popular styles of fall. Trust yourself and embrace it. We know you want to…

Dior Rouge Dior Couture Lip Color from Satin to Matte, Rouge Dior Collection

Yves Saint Laurent Star Clash Limited Edition Rouge Pur Couture

Tom Ford Ultra Rich Lip Color

The Statement Booty

There’s nothing we love more than a statement booty. Dress it up or dress it down, you can rock a booty at all times. Cropped denim blew up last season, which opened up the opportunity for booties to really make a debut. Think buckles, leopard prints, sparkles, and silk. You can pair these with edge leather leggings, denim or a midi dress.

Sam Edelman Taye Mid Heel Booties

Cole Haan Booty

Kenneth Cole Leopard Booty

As you know, track is back at Bloomingdales, so channel your inner Elle Woods and revamp your Juicy Couture wardrobe. In addition to track being back, so is velvet! This is lending a whole new meaning to feeling your look. Soft, luxe velvet is EVERYWHERE. Feel free to rock velvet in dark tones or soft hues because this trend is here to stay. Insider tip: Velvet looks its best when it catches the light!

Sam Edelman Reema Velvet d’Orsay Pointed Toe Flats – 100% Bloomingdale’s Exclusive

J Brand Velvet Skinny Jeans 100% Bloomingdales Exclusive

Juicy Couture Velour Track Suit 100% Bloomingdales Exclusive

We hope this post gave you insight into what you should and shouldn’t be wearing this fall. It’s also important to note that a majority of these looks are exclusive to Bloomingdales, which means you’ll be the hottest trendsetter of the season!

Nordstrom Beauty Trend Week: Allison and Portia’s Top Picks

It’s that time of year again: Nordstrom Beauty Trend Week is in full swing at Town Center mall. Although the event started Sept. 16, it continues until the 24.Boca Mag sent us to Nordstrom’s early this week to check things out, and there’s a ton of great products and activities. Plus, you can sign up for skincare and beauty consultations. Here are our top 5 picks for this year:

Yves Saint Laurent Mon Paris Eau de Parfum, 3 oz., $122

Ladies, put this one at the top of your holiday wish list. Both Portia and I loved this warm floral perfume. The Datura flower is one of the strongest aspects of the fragrance, which gives it a sensual yet sophisticated style. Hints of pear, jasmine sambac, raspberry, white musk and white peony add a soft element. Sa-woon.

MAC’s Little $10 Display (items all $10/ea.)

Who doesn’t like high-quality makeup options, especially at reasonable prices? This “bargain tree,” so to speak, was something I liked because it gives consumers the ability to try new products without breaking the bank. Look for a new shade of lipstick to wear out this weekend. Try a new mascara or pick up some cleansing facial wipes. The options are endless and make great stocking stuffers, too.

Bodega Venetta Knot Eau de Parfum, 75ml, $160

Someone sprayed this as they walked past us, and I had to know what it was. Not only is the design simply elegant, but so is the fragrance. Clementine, lavender, rose and peony blend to create a floral scent that conjures memories of summers overseas. Wear it when you want to leave a lasting impression, or for a wonderful evening out.

Classic Maison Candel in Prosecco Bellini, Voluspa, $29

Portia really has this thing for scents. (Ok, we both do a little.) But she REALLY has a thing for candles—Voluspa candles, actually. Nordstrom has a great selection of them, and when we found the display, it was hard to pass up. Her favorite candle is the Prosecco Bellini: 12 ounces of coconut wax with evidence of peaches, apricots and sparkly Prosecco. It’s perfect for the in the kitchen or the outdoor patio.

Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cream, 1.7 oz., $27.50

This 24-hour moisturizing cream is great for a variety of skin types and can be applied in the morning or at night. It’s light, has a clean scent and leaves skin soft and smooth after regular application.  Make this a part of your regular skincare routine.

5 Must-Have Summer Products

Summer is here, which calls for sunny beach days, family vacations and slow strolls along Boca’s favorite outdoor mall, Mizner Park. While these activities seem harmless and fun (your credit card may disagree), you’d never expect the toll they take on your health if you don’t take the necessary precautions. Without proper skin care and protection, an innocent outdoor walk can leave you getting sunburnt, feeling fatigue or suffering a headache. All these symptoms are caused from constant sun exposure, but they are easily prevented. We compiled a list of must-have summer items that will keep you looking fresh and vibrant—as well as feeling good—all summer long.

1. Sunscreen is a must during the summer. Getting into the habit of applying facial sunscreen every day as part of your morning routine will help you avoid getting sunburnt and prevent the dreaded peeling that comes along with it. Applying facial sunscreen also does wonders to your skin. It slows down the aging process by delaying face wrinkles. I recommend “Supergoop! Everyday Sunscreen,” because it has SPF 50, so you know it is allowing maximum protection. It is also water-resistant, oil-free and does not use any parabens, sulfates and phthalates that are common in most sunscreens. The best part is that it is cruelty-free.

2. Freckles may be one of a child’s cutest features, but they do not have the same reputation for adults. Freckles on adults get labeled as “age spots,” and the visible brown hyperpigmentation is usually correlated to constant sun exposure. However, some creams allow for brown spots to fade and even be prevented. A worldwide favorite is “Dr. Andrew Weil for Origins Mega-Bright Dark Spot Correcting Serum.” This amazing cream is lightweight and smells of delicious white peony and licorice. It helps reduce visible dark spots while correcting your skin tone. The cream also prevents future dark spots and works on all types of skin.

3. One of the most common, yet easily avoidable, mistakes that affect your health during the summer is a lack of hydration. Staying hydrated is key for great skin, healthy hair and clean nails. That’s why you should always carry a water bottle, and the environmentally conscious founders of S’well have created the water bottle of the future. The cute and trendy designs are only half the appeal: The bottle keeps drinks cold for 24 hours and hot for 12 hours. S’well is bound to become your new summer companion.

4. Sunglasses are not just an accessory in completing an outfit but a very useful tool in protecting your eyes from sun exposure. Without sunglasses, you can face hurtful headaches, migraines and fatigue. Sunglasses are an easy and stylish way of preventing these maladies while ensuring that you never have to squint your eyes in the sun. One of my favorites are these Tory Burch gold-and-blue sunglasses. The marble pattern is unique, and the cat-eye wing will never go out of style.

5. It took me too long to realize how damaging the sun and saltwater can be for your hair. A good shampoo and conditioner is sometimes not enough to replenish your hair after a long trip or beach day. I have very thick hair, and I consider its care crucial. Thus, I have scouted various stores for the“Macadamia Natural Oil Deep Repair Masque.” It revives your hair’s natural shine and bounce after one use. It contains Omega 3, 5, and 7 as well as its main ingredient, macadamia oil, to revitalize your locks.

#NoMakeUp Summer Essentials

It’s no secret: It’s piping hot this summer! Your body sticking to your car seat has become a part of your everyday life. With this kind of heat, who wants to deal with a full-blown makeup routine? Say goodbye to your foundation woes and say hello to the #NoMakeUp movement that is taking over the Internet. Singer Alicia Keys is at the forefront of this movement, and she’s doing a pretty great job of keeping us all motivated to take the courageous no-makeup plunge. So it’s time to exchange your time-gobbling makeup routine for these quick and easy solutions.

1. Fresh Sugar Plum Lip Tint SPF 30

With so much to do and so little time, it’s easy to forget that your lips need protection too. As you age, it’s extremely important to keep your lips protected. Lips can get cracked, chapped and sunburnt in this Florida heat. I’m a huge fan of lip products that offer sun protection and color. That’s why Fresh Sugar Plum Lip Tint SPF 15 takes the No. 1 spot on my #NoMakeUp Summer Beauty Bag Essentials list. Fresh Sugar Plum Lip Tint is the perfect sassy addition to your life. Throw on this lip tint on your way out the door for an effortless look!

2. Burt’s Bees White Tea Extract Facial Cleansing Cloths

We’ve all been there. It’s mid-day, and you’re up to your neck with errands and barely keeping your head on straight. Suddenly you look at your face in the mirror and nearly have a heart attack as you think, “Has my face really been this oily all day!?” Constant heat can cause skin to produce more oil, which can cause frequent breakouts. Gently remove dirt and oil throughout the day with these invigorating Burt’s Bees White Tea Extract Facial Cleansing Cloths. The calming cucumber and soothing aloe will leave you feeling refreshed in no time.

3. Shea Moisture Coconut and Hibiscus Hold & Shine Spray

In the summertime, I’m pretty much half lion. My hair has a mind of its own, and with my schedule booked full of exciting pastimes, this quick fix product is the perfect solution. Shea Moisture Hold & Shine Spray hydrates hair with nourishing ingredients like coconut, shea butter and even Japanese honeysuckle. Secret Hint: This spray also double-acts as a lovely body spray. I promise you’ll smell like the tastiest coconut cake in town!

4. Aveeno Naturals Daily Moisturizer SPF 30

I can’t say it enough: moisture, moisture and more moisture is the ultimate key for a sexy summer glow. After washing your face, apply Aveeno Naturals Daily Moisturizer SPF 30 to keep your skin protected and hydrated throughout the day. This moisturizer provides long-lasting moisture without an oily residue.

5. Sephora Snag-free Hair Elastics

You’ll definitely need a chic messy bun to go with your fresh-faced look. If you’re anything like me, hair elastics are your own personal version of hell, but these elastics won’t leave you saying “ouch.” They are made with a unique elastic fiber to prevent those painful hair snags. Beat the heat and use these products to keep your hair off your face while you live it up this summer.

Spa for the holidays

The holidays can be full of fun, love and stress. To ease the burden, the Seagate Hotel & Spa (1000 E. Atlantic Ave., Delray Beach, 561/665-4950) is among the local spas that are offering holiday-themed pampering packages.

Through December, the Seagate Spa will be offering a December Holiday Celebrations Package, including a peppermint body polish, peppermint Swedish massage, express facial, peppermint manicure and pedicure and a complimentary peppermint twist martini. Clients 21 years and older can enjoy this yummy luxury for $304.

The Spa at PGA National (400 Ave. of the Champions, Palm Beach Gardens, 800/843-7725) is yet another South Florida resort offering holiday spa specials. Try a Spiked Plum Pudding Manicure/Pedicure for $89. This 75 minutes is sure to be a sweet treat, complete with a plum chiffon melt massaged into your skin. Or try a Pumpkin Spice and Everything Nice Facial for $109. You’ll feel like celebrating after an aromatic and vitamin-infused pumpkin peel and hydrating mask that leave you with that holiday glow. PGA National’s holiday Toasty Marshmallow Melt (50-minute) Massage is a mere $99. And there’s more, but the resort’s Holiday Spa Traditions menu expires Dec. 31, so hurry and claim your treatment or gift.

John Barrett in Boca

In 1996, an iconic department store reached out to John Barrett and extended, arguably, the most exclusive and career-altering opportunity in hairdressing history—the chance to open the first salon at Bergdorf Goodman in New York.

Twenty years later, with history set to repeat itself starting right here in Boca, his new partnership with Saks Fifth Avenue is less a game-changer for Barrett and more a match made in luxury heaven. Barrett eventually will operate 15 in-store salons across the U.S. and Canada, the first of which has opened at the Saks inside Town Center at Boca Raton.

During his recent visit to the Town Center salon, Barrett took time to sit down with Boca Raton and discuss the Saks relationship, what his customers can expect moving forward and what the number 20 means.

Why was the Boca Saks the first salon to open?

I was approached by Saks about 18 months ago to operate in-store salons. We’ll completely redesign [the existing salon space], but what we wanted to do in Boca was just start the relationship—we wanted to get used to the store and the environment. We’ll stay open until about May, and then we’ll remodel the space and have a grand opening for next season.

The relationship [with Saks] is a win-win. In my current location (at Bergdorf Goodman) we see about 70,000 people per year—and those customers populate the store. So it’s a great customer base. I don’t know if you’re familiar with the retail metric, but it suggests that if 100 people come into your store, 20 will spend. Our metric is different; 100 percent of the people who come in have an intention of spending money.

Is it difficult to open something that doesn’t look the way you know it will look down the road?

It’s very tough for me. But I’m happy to work here this season. When you work in an environment, there are things you find out. That will be useful for me—finding out what’s good, what’s not good. It’s a time to do troubleshooting. It’s also about getting to know this client base.

We have a training program called JB Care that teaches everyone how to interact with the clients. The consistency is an important [part of the John Barrett brand], from the hairdressers to the people at the front desk.

Is there anything in your mind about the blueprint of this store that will distinguish it?

As you walk around Saks, every boutique is simply beautiful. So our space needs to be extremely beautiful in its own way; when you walk inside, it needs to be an elevated experience, a feast for the eyes.

The salon industry has become more and more specialized in recent years. Do you react to that or is your brand so unique that it stands on its own?

We’re not reacting; we’re taking a leadership position. Which is scary, but I guess the brave survive. We [already have] a unique beauty experience. But we’re trying to reinvent the idea of the salon. Part of it is total integration; in our Bond Street location in New York, you’ll see beautiful vintage Rolex watches. You walk into our Palm Beach store, and you’ll find lovely jewelry pieces. There are all these wonderful things to catch your eye; I want to do things that are curated and not readily available. We want to enhance the experience for Saks as well as for ourselves.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Bergdorf salon. What does that number mean to you?

It’s shocking. What happens in business is that there’s more looking forward than reflection—and not always looking forward in a great way. It’s like, “Let me cope with this situation, let me put this fire out,” rather than looking back and saying, “Wow.”

So many extraordinary things have happened over the years. Maybe at the time I didn’t appreciate them as such, but, really … who else has sat with Princess Diana and read the silly letters that people sent her when she arrived in the city. So 20 years is a big deal—especially to stay, consistently, at such a high level in the most competitive city in the world.
