On Saturday, Nov. 9, the Delray Beach Historical Society (DBHS) is celebrating its 60th anniversary as well as the 100th anniversary of the historic Cason Cottage.

The DBHS is welcoming the community to join in on the Barbeque Birthday Bash celebration, which will include delectable dishes from Troy’s Barbecue, a wine and beer bar, live music, yard games, and entry to all DBHS history exhibits. And since no celebration is complete without a cake, Zoe Wexler of Delray’s Two Fat Cookies will be providing a giant pineapple cake to commemorate the occasion.

“I feel that [the anniversary] is definitely a cause for celebration and reflection on how far we’ve come,” says DBHS Executive Director Winnie Edward. “It’s a time to reflect on all the people that have helped build this campus up, of which there are many.” And it all starts with Ethel Sterling Williams, the founder of the DBHS.

“She was quite a business woman who recognized there’s nothing so permanent as change,” says William Sterling Williams, Ethel’s grandson. “She really fought with very much of a visionary look at things to preserve the identity of this town so it would not look like so much of the southeast Florida.”

Of the upcoming anniversary, Williams says, “I think it’s spectacular, and Winnie [Edwards] has done just a tremendous job and it’s nice to see that Delray has recognized the past to preserve the future.”

Tickets to the event are $45 per person, or $35 for DBHS members, and kids 16 and under can get in for $15. Tickets include food, two drink tickets, and entrance to all exhibits, and can be purchased here.

For those looking to give a birthday gift to the DBHS, donate to the Founder’s Anniversary Fund through the DBHS website. Proceeds will benefit the Society’s educational programming.
