West Palm Beach is brimming with pop culture during the next two weeks. Check out the following events—all within walking distance of downtown Clematis Street.
Friday Night Jazz: The Mandel Public Library (411 Clematis St.) is hosting a special summer edition of its Friday Night Jazz series July 13. Acclaimed jazz group the Davis and Dow Quartet will perform for patrons in the Library Auditorium at 5:30 p.m.
The Davis and Dow Quartet—featuring singer Julie Davis and guitarist Kelly Dow—have toured the world and drawn raves for their jazzy musical union, including a nod for “Best Jazz Album” at the Florida Music Awards.
The concert is staged by The Friends of the West Palm Beach Public Library, which creates events that encourage community involvement with the library. Doors open at 5:10 p.m. General admission ticket prices range from $5 for members and $10 for the general public. Call 561/868-7709 for more information.
Sunday on the Waterfront: Catch a classic battle of the bands at the Meyer Amphitheatre (104 Datura St.) this weekend as the “Sunday on the Waterfront” concert series pits three groups vying for a gig with Micky Dolenz of the The Monkees.
Sunday’s concert (July 15) features three bands playing rock music from the 1980s—That’s So ’80s, Livin’ on a Prayer: The Ultimate Bon Jovi Tribute, and Pee Wee Lewis and The Hues. The winning group will be part of the bill at Dolenz’s Oct. 21 show at the Meyer. A similar concert showdown on Aug. 19, featuring three groups playing today’s music, will round out the lineup for the Dolenz show.
The free event runs from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Guests are encouraged to dress in attire suitable for the musical themes. The best dressed will be awarded prizes.
Author at Mandel Public Library: By day, Denise Marie Nieman is a Palm Beach County attorney. But in her spare time, the Jupiter resident is a glass-half-full guru interested in putting a bounce in your step and the “sparkle” back in your soul. She offers a four-step guide to “Get Red Carpet Ready” in her self-published Amazon best-seller Rock the World Rehab.
This “Body+Mind+Heart+Soul Detox Adventure” may have a wordy title, but it offers practical, motivational advice about achieving overall health. Nieman, who has been known to give away tiaras during appearances, will discuss the book and her philosophy at the Mandel Public Library (411 Clematis St.) on Wednesday, July 25 from 6 to 7 p.m. The free event and will be held at the Clematis Room of the library. Call 561/868-7701 for more information.
