The stage doors of Mizner Park Amphitheater will soon receive an artistic refresh—and you can have a hand in the project’s direction. As part of Boca Raton’s continued celebration of its centennial, the city is inviting residents to submit five-line “Odes to Boca” with each of the lines corresponding to the number in their zip code, i.e. this example from Marie Small, whose address ends in 33431:
3 Winning the Jackpot!
3 Morning sunrise walk
4 Moon, turtles, otters, owl
3 Photographer’s dream. It’s
1 Free
The Ode to Boca project, a collaboration with the community-building nonprofit O, Miami, began earlier this year as part of the city’s formative centennial activities, and previously submitted odes will be accepted this time around as well. Top selections will help inspire a commissioned local artist to create a new permanent mural on the Amphitheater stage doors that encompasses the spirit of Boca Raton.
The mural initiative is a key project from Public Art Boca, the city’s public-art program run by Veronica Hatch, and is budgeted at $80,000. Interested artists can fill out a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) form. Shortlisted artists will receive $2,500 for concept proposals, with a selection panel ultimately determining which winning artist will create the Ode to Boca mural.
The deadline for both ode submissions and artist RFQs is July 21; the installation date for the mural is scheduled for October.
