Right now, when Boca Raton families are thinking mostly about back-to-school shopping, fall sports and goals for the school year ahead, you might be interested as a parent to find out that arts education is officially more than just a “fun” extracurricular activity.

According to recent research by Americans for the Arts:

  • Early childhood arts education significantly improves vocabulary, communication and memory in young children. Source
  • Students who take four years of arts and music classes in high school score an average of 100 points higher on the SAT than those who don’t. Source
  • Creativity is one of the top three personality traits sought by U.S. employers. Source

If those aren’t reason enough to check out the fall kids programming sponsored by the Boca Raton Museum of Art, I don’t know what is. TheMuseum’s Art School (801 W. Palmetto Park Road, 561/392-2503) is hosting an Open House on Saturday, August 27 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Children and teens (and even us adults!) can visit the art studios, meet the teachers and see demonstrations on how to create pottery, stone carving, print making, painting, portrait and figure drawing. I hear there will also be some fantastic raffles and giveaways from local Boca Raton art stores!

Even as I watch my daughter making a huge mess finger painting, I truly believe that the arts round out our little people. So if your child’s school doesn’t have a huge focus on the arts, be sure to take them by the Boca Museum’s Art School. They may fall in love with something that they never would have had exposure to otherwise!
